The Benefits Of Drinking Water - The Obvious & The Not So Obvious Reasons

We always hear that we need to drink more water, but wouldn't it be better if someone just explained WHY we need to drink more water. Below I have listed a few of these reasons, but I am sure there are plenty more reasons. These are reasons how water can help solve many annoying day-to-day health issues, and possibly prevent a few big ones.

Benefits of Drinking Water

Healthy Heart – Making the habit of drinking lots of water on a regular basis has proved to be literally a life saver. A six-year study that was published in 2002 in the American Journal Epidemiology found that people who drink more than 5 glasses of water a day, are 41% less likely to die from a heart attack. Other researches have also shown that staying hydrated can reduce the risk of bladder cancer by 50% and colon cancer by 45%.

Weight Loss – Drinking water is believed to be an extremely effective appetite suppressant. Sometimes when we think we are hungry in reality we are just thirsty, so having a glass of water quenches your thirst and fills you up at the same time. Try drinking a glass of water 30 minutes before each meal because it will reduce the amount of food you will want to eat. You’re a lot better off drinking water than soda drinks or alcohol.  Water has no fat, no calories, no carbs and no sugars – why drink anything else?

Boost Brainpower – Research shows that being dehydrated by a level of only 1% of your total body weight can reduce your cognitive performance, so drinking a lot of water is vital for your mental performance. On the other hand, by drinking the necessary amount of water per day (8 glasses on average depending on age, activity, and weight mostly), your cognitive performance increases by as much as 30%.

Skin Care – I personally find it quite sad that people, mostly women, spend so much money on skin care creams and products, while neglecting the cheapest and most effective one which is plain old water. Water is the single most important element for cellular integrity. So ladies, the next time you splash out your hard earned money to look healthier and beautiful, try drinking a glass of water.  

Headache Preventer and Curer – Do the doctors know something that we don’t know when they tell us to use that old traditional prescription “drink lots of water” when we are sick? Water is a miracle cure for so many common ailments including headaches, fatigue, joint pains and so much more. Dehydration is one of the most common causes for headaches. If you have a hangover, then you need to drink loads of water to re-hydrate your body.

As mentioned above, these are only a few of the benefits we get from drinking water. With over 60% of our body being water, I am sure you understand why we need to drink so much on a regular basis. Try drinking a glass of water every 1 hour you are awake. If you feel thirsty, it means that your body is already dehydrated, and you want to prevent this. If you feel that drinking water is a bit boring, try herbal teas in the winter and lemon water in the summer time.

Bottom line is – Drink water, stay healthy!
