Your choices, behaviors and habits are influenced by very powerful external forces. These forces have a very subtle control over our lives, therefore it is necessary to understand them in order to use them to our advantage, instead of allowing them to effect us in a negative way, and stop us from reaching our goals.
We are all affected by 3 kinds of influences:
a. What we feed our mind
b. Our Influential Group Of People
Our brain is programmed to do one thing and one thing only, and that is to “survive”. It is not designed to make us happy; on the contrary, it is always on the “look out” for negative resources. If we listen to the news on the radio or the television, then rest assured we are feeding our brain with negativity. People relish sensational and shocking news, and the media masters know this all too well.
So how do we protect our mind from all these negativity influences?
That’s easy!!! – With discipline.
Just stay away from all of the garbage. Instead of having the radio on in your car, listening to all the negative news that goes on in the world, plus all the advertisements that we are bombarded with, put on an audio CD about positive inspirational self development programs. Stories about what is good and possible in life. Listen to different success stories and ideas on how to create more abundance in your life.
While at home, instead of wasting your time watching a show or film on television, fantasizing on how life can be, read 50 pages of a book that will help you “live” your own reality and help you become a better person. Do this and you will separate yourself from the herd of average people.
To help you understand and become aware of what you are feeding your mind, write down for one week, how many hours you spend on things like; watching television, listening to the news in your car, reading magazines and gossip blogs, and chatting with your friends about the local gossip, either by phone or social media sites.
You will be surprised how many hours you waste, that you could instead have been using to feed your mind with positive and inspirational information. Throughout this website on the right hand side, there are many personal development books and audios you can order from Amazon, so you can feed your mind the right way, and start investing in yourself.
According to a Harvard research, another influence is your influential (reference) group which determine by as much as 95% of your success or failure in life. One of my mentors, the late Jim Rohn, said that we become the combined average of the five people we hang around with the most. The quality of our life, including our health, income and our attitude will be reflected by the people who we surround ourselves with.
Now this other influence of our five (or more) friends, can work both positively and negatively, but have in mind that you cannot hang around negative people and expect to have a positive attitude in life.
Find people who have positive qualities in the areas in your life you want to improve – people who have the financial and business success you desire, the parental skills you want, the relationships you wish for, and in general the lifestyle you relish. And then spend as much time with them as possible, so they enter your “group of five”.
Basically if you want to start eating healthier, hang around people who eat healthier than you. If you want to increase your income, hang around people who earn more than you. And if you want to have a more positive attitude and tackle life in a better way, make sure you hang around positive and inspirational people.
Another influence is your environment. When I mention the environment and our surroundings, I am not just referring to whatever physical is around us, but also the psychological barriers that we are up against on a daily basis. Whatever there is out there that is stopping you from success, is an obstacle that you need to remove or at least minimize.
It can be something that you are doing right now that just isn’t working for you, or is broken, or even incomplete; something that is stopping you from working efficiently and productively. This obstacle can be as small as an incomplete task that you need to take care of. It stops you from moving forward, because it is stuck at the back of your mind, and always reminding you that it needs attention at some point.
You also need to protect your environment from physical and mental emotional influences. I am sure you will agree that “you get in life what you tolerate”. If you tolerate being underpaid and overworked, then that will be the case. If you tolerate your body being overweight, then nothing will happen to change that situation. If you tolerate disrespect, you will be disrespected from almost everyone around you.
Remove all of these obstacles and barriers from your life and do not tolerate anything that you do not totally agree with.
