How and Why You Should Laugh More

Even though laughter has so many health benefits connected to it, I think the most convincing reason why you should laugh is that laughter has the ability to take away any pain we might be feeling, even if it’s just for a short period of time. Numerous studies of people in pain or discomfort have reported that when they laugh, their pain does not go away, but it does seem to not bother them as much. 

Why Laugh More

Let’s have a look at a few statistics before we go on and analyze in detail on why you should laugh more.

  1. A study has shown that 15 minutes of laughter a day is as important for your heart as 30 minutes of exercise 3 times a week.
  2. Both men and women laugh a lot, however females laugh about 125% more than their male counterparts.
  3. The laughter of the female is the critical index of a healthy couple’s relationship. (So guys, try making your wife laugh more to save your marriage).
  4. Healthy children laugh as much as 400 times per day, whereas adults tend to laugh only about 20 times per day. It is apparent that laughter declines dramatically as people age.
  5. Laughter is contagious, just like yawning.

I feel that statistic number 4 above, says a lot about us adults, and that is we don’t laugh as much as we need too. A good way to change that statistic is to start by letting yourself see the lighter side of life. You need to let go and just be yourself

You need to laugh at yourself and your actions sometimes, and share your most embarrassing moments with others. Try and laugh at situations rather than bemoan them. If you can find the humor and positives in a bad situation, then you will improve your mood and the mood of others around you.

When you hear others laughing it’s always a good idea to join the company. More often people are very generous in sharing something funny because it gives them an opportunity to feel important and feed off the humor you find in it. There are many “jokers” around who laugh easily and make others laugh with them. They have the ability to find the humor in everyday events which can be contagious.

To go one step further, have you ever heard of the saying “Fake It Until You Make It”? Try faking your smile or laughter even if you do not think that what you have just seen or heard is not that amusing. The body cannot distinguish between fake laughter and real laughter and the benefits are exactly the same. Saying that, don’t laugh at anything you see or hear or else people will definitely think you are in Cuckoos Land. 

One thing is for sure, in that regardless of whether laughter actually improves your health or boosts your energy, it definitely improves your quality of life including the lives of others around you.
